Chiaroscuro

In art chiaroscuro is an Italian term which literally means ‘light-dark’. Drawings with a dark medium such as charcoal accompanied by white highlighting exemplify this technique. The description refers to clear tonal contrasts which are often used to suggest the volume and modeling of the subjects depicted.
